PSAT Test Prep

PSAT Tutoring and Test Prep in Phoenix, AZ

The PSAT is not used for college admissions decisions, but if you are named as a national merit scholar, many colleges offer full or nearly full scholarships.

If you are a student at any Phoenix-area high school who is looking forward to college, you have likely heard that you should take the PSAT/NMSQT. It is important that you take this test by your junior year of high school and that you score well on it. This test is much more than a simple practice test for the SAT. The PSAT deserves your attention and preparation because it can lead to scholarships. By getting help from an expert PSAT tutor from Going Ivy, you may improve your score and your chances of winning scholarships as a result.

Why Choose Going Ivy for PSAT Tutoring?

Why PSAT Tutoring is Important

The PSAT/NMSQT is much more than a preliminary or practice test for the SAT. While it certainly can help by familiarizing you with the type of questions and format of the SAT, it is also important for other reasons. Many students ignore the NMSQT acronym that follows the PSAT, but they shouldn’t. These letters stand for National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test because the test is used to determine who will be named as national merit scholar semifinalists and as national merit scholars. In order to be named as a national merit scholar semifinalist, students must attain a minimum threshold score that is established for their states. The threshold score is set after the test according to the scores of other students who also take the test at the same time as you in Arizona. Students who meet the minimum threshold may receive letters of commendation or be named as semifinalists. The semifinalists are the highest-scoring students in each state and are able to apply to be named as national merit scholars. Most semifinalists who apply for the designation as national merit scholars are accepted as long as they meet academic requirements as well.

An important caveat is that since most students fail to prepare for the PSAT, you may gain an edge by getting tutoring help to prepare for the test. The fact that you will be competing only against other students in Arizona instead of students nationwide means that your chances of meeting the state’s minimum threshold on your PSAT are fairly good with adequate preparation.

The PSAT also is good preparation for taking your ACT or PSAT because it is given under similar conditions as the actual standardized tests. It can also offer you a baseline score so that you can see the areas in which you might need additional help as you begin preparing for your admissions tests.

The PSAT is not used for college admissions decisions, and admissions committees will not see the scores or subscores. However, if you are named as a national merit scholar, many colleges will be impressed and offer full or nearly full scholarships. Corporations also have scholarships available to national merit scholars who meet their eligibility guidelines.

The Going Ivy Difference

There are several reasons why Going Ivy is better than our competitors. We use a focused, results-driven approach that is holistic, taking into account your personality, learning style, strengths and needs. After interviewing you to get to know you and your needs better, our tutors design lesson plans that are tailored for you. Many of our competitors offer generic tutoring and cookie-cutter approaches meant to work for the masses. Students who choose them may meet in large tutoring classes at which the tutors teach to the lowest common denominator. If you are waiting for others to catch up, you are not learning during that time. At Going Ivy, we have found that our students do best with the kind of one-on-one help that our PSAT tutors offer.

We have world-class tutors who are available to meet you at your preferred location. You can also choose to come into our Phoenix headquarters to take practice tests under similar conditions to the actual PSAT. We have tutors who are embedded at Ivy League and other exclusive colleges who are available to you by video conferencing. This can also allow you to get an idea of what life is like at an exclusive institution. Because we understand how busy high school students often are, we are flexible when scheduling with you. We are also highly vested in your success and are available to you 24 hours a day and seven days a week via telephone, email or text message.
