PSAT Test Prep

PSAT Tutoring and Test Prep

Students who are named as national merit scholars from their PSAT may receive far more in scholarships than those who simply get a high ACT or SAT score.

If you are a high school student who has a goal of gaining admission into an elite college, you’ll want to take the PSAT. While this test is not directly related to gaining admission into college, it is important because you may be able to use your score to qualify as a national merit scholar. Many students make the mistake of failing to prepare for the PSAT and then do not receive good scores on it. By getting help from an expert tutor at Going Ivy, you may be able to obtain a great score on your PSAT and be well on your way to being prepared for your SAT when it’s time to take it.

Our tutors have great communication skills, allowing them to break down the material into easily understood pieces so that you are better able to accelerate your learning. Your Going Ivy tutor will teach you the strategies that you need to implement to improve your PSAT scores and will work to build up your endurance, confidence and any weaker areas while also building upon the areas in which you are strong.

Why PSAT Tutoring is Important

Many students and parents view the PSAT as simply a practice test for the SAT. They should instead view it as one of the most important tests that they take during high school because of the potential scholarships that it can bring. The PSAT is used to determine who will be named as a national merit semifinalist. National merit semifinalists are able to submit applications to be named as national merit scholars. Students who are named as national merit scholars may receive far more in scholarships than they might from simply getting a high ACT or SAT score. In order to qualify as a semifinalist, students must meet the established threshold PSAT scores for their states. The thresholds do not require perfect scores. This makes attaining the status and the potential scholarships easier than obtaining the top scores on the ACT or SAT.

In addition to the potential for scholarships, the PSAT also helps to prepare students for taking their SATs. The test can help students to understand the content and structure of the SAT and provide them with baseline scores so that they can identify the areas in which they need the most work. In order to maximize your ability to score well on the PSAT, getting help from an expert tutor at Going Ivy can help.

While the PSAT has no formal role in whether or not you will be accepted into college, obtaining a high score and attaining the status of a national merit scholar will no doubt strengthen your application. If you get a good score on the PSAT, it also can indicate your performance on your standardized admissions tests and provide you with a confidence boost. The national merit scholarship is just $2,500, but 52 universities offer full scholarships to students who attain the status. National merit scholars who are admitted to the University of Southern California are automatically deemed to be USC presidential scholars, which comes with a 50 percent tuition scholarship.

The Going Ivy Difference: Expert PSAT Tutors

Going Ivy uses a results-driven approach with our students, focusing on helping you to achieve your goals by working to increase your personal motivation for success. We start by conducting an in-depth interview so that we can assess where you currently are, your learning style and your particular strengths and needs. We then tailor a program that is individualized for you so that you can understand the steps that are needed for you to reach your goals. We have learned that students learn better when they receive one-on-one attention. By contrast, tutoring for a national chain is often done using a one-size-fits-all approach and large group settings that teach to the lowest common denominator.

Our tutors are the best in the industry. We also have tutors who are currently attending the most elite colleges in the country, including Princeton, Harvard, Stanford and others. We are flexible and are able to meet you at a location near your school or home. Our tutors who are embedded on the campuses of top schools are also available for PSAT tutoring via video conferencing, which allows you to be able to get a glimpse of life on the campuses of the most exclusive colleges in the country. We are also available to answer your questions via email, text or phone 24 hours per day and seven days per week.
